2009 Playoff Pool

The Pool

The most points at the end of four rounds of the playoffs wins.  It’s as simple as that.  Here’s the trick though… by the Finals, you will only have a maximum of six players playing on your team.

The Selection Sheet

On the selection sheet, from 24 boxes, you will choose 24 players.  There will be 12 from each conference (seven forwards, four defensemen and a goaltender).  The catch of the playoff pool is you can only have a maximum of three players from any one team.

There will be no trades in the Playoff Pool, what you pick is what you get.  Period.

The Selection Sheet will include all teams in the league, so it will be your responsibility to know which teams are in and which teams are out.  The best place to check is NHL.com, where they have their standings updated every night.

The Points

The playoffs will have a similar point structure as the regular season, it will have a little twist:

All Players Goalies

Goal – 1 point Win – 2 points

Assist – 1 point Shutout – 2 points

Game Winning Goal – 1 point

Game Winning Goals are actual statistics given to the deciding goal scorer of the game.  If the New York Rangers were to beat the New Jersey Devils 2-0 with Chris Drury scoring the first and Scott Gomez the second, Drury’s goal would count as the winner, as it is the deciding goal of the game.

Goalies will have their goals and assists count towards their point totals and in the highly unlikely event that a player has to dress as a goalie and wins, those points will count towards his point totals.

The tie-breaking system will be done as follows:

1. Points earned

2. Goals For

3. Game Winning Goals For

4. Wins

In the highly-unlikely event of another tie, another tie-breaking question will be on the Selection Sheet, as it will pertain to guessing the total number of games played in the 2009 Playoffs.

The Money

The buy-in for the pool will be $10.  Not too bad, eh?  Please be sure you have your $10 in before or when you have your sheet submitted.

The prizes will be broken out by the number of people who are participating in the pool.  In the regular season, there were 41 people in the pool and more are expected for the playoffs.  A prize breakdown will be published when the final numbers of teams are announced.

The Website

If you go to www.opiatedsherpa.com, you will find a link to the Playoff Pool webpage.  You will also find the link to the regular season pool… if you felt the need to see how it all went down and what you’re up against.  If you want to keep up with the news, go to the Opiated Sherpa’s Hockey Pool Domain at www.osherpanews.blogspot.com.

The Deadline

The Playoff Pool will go live on April 2 and the deadline for submissions will be April 15.  The regular season will end on April 12 and the playoffs will start on April 15.  If a team has been submitted early with players on teams that are considered to be “on the bubble” and do not make it into the playoffs, they have until the submission deadline to change any of these players.  If any team does not rectify their choices of a player or players not in the playoffs, they will be made examples of in the newsletter.  I’m just sayin’!
